Burgas has about 4,000 hotel beds.
Hold that number, because everything else on this page follows from it. Eurovision brings delegations from up to 38 countries, a press centre built for 1,500 journalists, production crew, EBU staff, and then the fans, who arrive in groups and stay the whole week. Central Burgas will be gone early and what is left will not be priced like Burgas.
Now the good part. Unlike Liverpool, Malmö or Basel, this host city has an entire coastline of empty hotels sitting twenty to forty-five minutes away, in a month when almost nobody is using them.
The May advantage nobody has clocked yet
The Bulgarian Black Sea season does not properly start until June. Mid-May is shoulder: hotels are opening up through late April and May, the sea is cold enough to make you swear, the beach bars are running on half staff, and prices are nothing like July.
Which means Eurovision week here is a genuine anomaly. You are booking accommodation for one of the biggest events in European television, at pre-season rates, in resorts that would charge three times as much eight weeks later.
There is a catch, and it is the single most useful thing on this page. Check that your hotel is actually open on your dates. Plenty of Sunny Beach properties do not open until late May or June. Others open the rooms but not the pool, the spa or the main restaurant. Booking sites are not reliable about this. Email the hotel and ask directly — most will answer within a day, and in Bulgarian coastal hotels somebody is usually already on site by April.
Option 1: Stay in Burgas
If you want to walk to the arena, walk to the Eurovision Village and walk home at three in the morning, stay in the city. Burgas is compact — you can cross the centre on foot in about twenty minutes — so “central” here actually means central, which is not true of most host cities.
Aim for the area around Aleksandrovska, the pedestrian street that runs from the railway station up through the middle of town, or the streets edging the Sea Garden, the long waterfront park. Both put you within reach of the restaurants and bars and a short taxi from the arena.
The trade-off is price and availability. Book this one first or not at all.

Option 2: The resorts, ranked by how close they actually are
Pomorie — about 20 km, 25 minutes
The closest and the most overlooked. Pomorie is a real town on a narrow peninsula between the sea and a salt lake, with a working fishing harbour, mud baths that people travel for, and none of the party-strip reputation of its neighbours. Quiet, cheap, and if you want a short taxi home after a semi-final, this is the smartest address on the coast.

Nessebar — about 35 km, 30–40 minutes
The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on its own tiny peninsula, connected by a causeway, and it is the most photogenic place within reach of this Eurovision by a distance. Three thousand years of history, medieval churches, and about four hundred metres end to end.
Most accommodation is in the new town on the mainland side, which is ordinary but well connected. If you can get a room in the old town itself, take it — waking up there is a different experience entirely.

Sunny Beach — about 35 km, 30–40 minutes
The obvious one, and the one with the most beds by a wide margin. Sunny Beach is enormous, unsubtle and built for exactly this kind of crowd. Whatever the official EuroClub ends up being, the post-show drinking will end up here, because it always does.
Price range runs from genuinely cheap to genuinely good, which is unusual. In May you will find five-star properties at rates that would embarrass a Travelodge. Just be aware that a chunk of the resort is still switching the lights on that month.

Sveti Vlas — about 40 km
Sunny Beach’s quieter neighbour, tucked under wooded hills with a marina and a lot of apartment-style accommodation. Greener, calmer, better for sleeping. If you are travelling as a group and want a kitchen and a balcony rather than a buffet and a wristband, this is the one.

Sozopol — about 35 km, but the wrong side
Old-town charm without Nessebar’s coach parties, wooden Revival houses, a working harbour, and arguably the nicest small town on this coast. The problem for Eurovision week is geography: it sits south of Burgas while everything else is north, so late-night transport back is thinner and you cannot combine it easily with the resort strip.
Excellent for the days either side of the contest. Awkward as a base for the shows.

Option 3: The Varna gamble
Roughly two hours up the coast, Varna and the northern resorts — Golden Sands, Albena, Balchik — are a completely separate pool of accommodation that Eurovision demand will barely touch. Its own airport too.
Two hours each way on three show nights is a lot. But if you are coming for the final only, or if Burgas prices go somewhere silly, this is a real fallback rather than a theoretical one.

Getting from your hotel to the arena
Minibuses run constantly between Burgas and the northern resorts in season, and they are cheap. They are also not designed for eleven thousand people leaving a building at the same time.
Assume the shows will finish around midnight and that whatever shuttle arrangements the organisers announce will be oversubscribed. Two practical moves: travel in a group and split a taxi, or hire a car for the week and accept that you will park a long walk from the arena on show nights. A car is genuinely worth it here — the coast rewards driving and rates are low by Western European standards.

The one thing to do this week
Book something refundable now, before tickets go on sale in December.
This is the mistake people make at every single contest. They wait for the ticket ballot, win a pair, and then discover the rooms went months ago. Free-cancellation rates cost nothing to hold. If you miss out on tickets, you cancel and you have lost precisely nothing.
Rooms near a host city disappear faster than tickets do. That has been true in Liverpool, in Malmö, in Basel and in Vienna, and it will be far more true in a city with four thousand beds.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to stay in Burgas or on the coast?
Burgas if you want to walk everywhere and you book immediately. The coast if you want space, better value and a proper holiday around the contest. Pomorie is the closest compromise at 25 minutes.
How far is Sunny Beach from Arena Burgas?
About 35 km, so 30 to 40 minutes by road depending on traffic. Nessebar is a similar distance, Pomorie is closer at roughly 20 km.
Will hotels be open in May 2027?
Many will, but not all. The Black Sea season ramps up through May and peaks in July. Confirm directly with the property that it is open on your dates and that the facilities you care about are running.
How expensive will Eurovision week be?
Central Burgas will be expensive by Bulgarian standards. The resorts will not, because May is shoulder season. Expect to pay a fraction of what the same week would have cost in Basel or Vienna.
Should I book before I have tickets?
Yes, as long as it is refundable. Accommodation runs out before tickets do.
