Things To Do in Sunny Beach Bulgaria

Whether you want beach days, nightlife, day trips or something more active, Sunny Beach offers a mix of relaxation and развлечения that make it a complete holiday destination.

From relaxing beach days and boat trips to nightlife and nearby historic towns, there’s something here for every type of traveller.

Located just 35 km from Burgas Airport and minutes from the old town of Nessebar, it combines a long sandy coastline with full-scale tourist infrastructure. If you plan it properly, it delivers excellent value.

Let me walk you through it properly — based on my own experience.

When the Season Starts (and What That Really Means)

The official season starts in early May.

Here’s how it works in practice:

  • Early May: Larger hotels begin opening.
  • Mid-May: Beach bars start operating.
  • By the third week of May: Shops, restaurants, and attractions gradually come to life.
  • Early June: The resort is fully operational.

If you prefer space, better hotel rates, and calmer beaches, late May or September are strategic choices. July and August are peak — full energy, full capacity.

Weather by Month (May–October)

From my visits, here’s what you can realistically expect:

  • May: 20–24°C (water still cool but manageable)
  • June: 25–28°C (excellent swimming conditions)
  • July: 30–33°C (hot, intense sun)
  • August: 30–33°C (warm sea, peak atmosphere)
  • September: 24–27°C (my personal favorite)
  • October: 18–22°C (quiet, partial closures begin)

If you want warm sea without overwhelming crowds, September is the sweet spot.

Currency Update – Important

From February 1st 2026, Bulgaria’s official currency is the Euro (€).

Here’s my direct advice:

  • Use official bank ATMs or bank branches.
  • Avoid the blue and yellow independent cash machines scattered around the resort. Their fees are often excessive.

Cards are widely accepted, but it’s always good to carry some cash for smaller vendors.

Best Hotels in Sunny Beach

I’ve visited or inspected most of these properties personally. Each serves a different traveler profile.

Large all-inclusive complex, close to the center. Very good for families. Multiple pools, solid buffet standards, reliable service. If you want convenience and location — this works. This property is exceptionally well located — about 100 m from the sandy beach, mere minutes’ walk to the busiest stretch of promenade, shops, restaurants, and nightlife. Paid private parking on site is available.
Guest tip: The central position makes this ideal if you want easy access to everything without needing transfers or taxis.

Quieter, more refined. Located in the northern part of the resort, which I find significantly calmer. If you prefer elegance over nightlife noise — this is a strong choice. Helena Park is ideally positioned very close to the beach — under 200 m — and about 2–2.5 km from the heart of Sunny Beach centre, meaning quieter evenings and easy beach access.

My experience: This is a good option when you want proximity to the sea without being in the busiest street blocks.

Budget-friendly, clean, practical. Not luxury, but dependable. About 300 m to the beach. From there you can reach the wider resort centre on foot within 10–15 minutes. Free private parking is available on site.
Guest tip: A strong budget choice with pools and good local links, but if you’re traveling with pets — this isn’t your entry point.

Modern design, boutique feel, stylish interiors. Good option if you want something less traditional. iHotel is in central Sunny Beach — short stroll from shops, bars, and beach access (typically 5 – 8 minutes on foot). On-site parking and pet policies are best confirmed directly with reception — these can change with season.
My take: Stylish and modern; great if you want a central base without strict family-focus.

Family-focused, friendly atmosphere, good animation. Balanced value option. Laguna Park sits in the heart of Sunny Beach — about 300 m from the beach and roughly 500 m from the core promenade and central entertainment streets. Popular all-inclusive hotel close to the centre of Sunny Beach, known for its large pool complex with slides and lively atmosphere — a great choice for families and groups who want fun facilities within walking distance of the beach.
Guest tip: Great balance of location near amenities but slightly quieter than the very centre.

Very strong central location — about 150 m from the beach and a short stroll to Flower Street, restaurants, and nightlife. Self-parking is available on site for an additional fee (around €11 per day). This hotel is pet-friendly (up to ~8 kg with a daily fee).

Why this matters: The combination of central access, pet-friendly policy, and good facilities (pool/waterslides) makes this a standout pick for many travellers.

A quieter atmosphere while still being within walking distance of central areas. Good balance. This hotel also have own free waterpark. A comfortable walk — around 5–8 minutes to the beach and similar to central shops and eateries.

My insight: A solid mid-range option that feels more “local” than some chain hotels.

Belleville is located in the southern section of Sunny Beach; walking to the beach takes about 8–10 minutes, and to the main centre around 12–15 minutes on foot. Part of a larger complex. All-inclusive focus. Good for families seeking structured holidays.
Guest tip: Slightly removed from the highest-traffic areas, good if you want a quieter block.

Booking Excursions – Best Things to do for perfect holiday

Sunny Beach is full of local excursion sellers offering “big discounts.” Some are licensed. Many are not.

From personal experience, I strongly recommend booking through:

  • Licensed representatives
  • Even better — your tour operator’s hotel rep

When we arrived, we received a welcome email from our TUI hotel rep. The next morning, we had a scheduled meeting. There he explaned to us the area layout, activity options, exact locations of local bus stops. Wa given us safety advice and even restorants recommedations.

All our excursions and tours were booked through him.

Result:

  • Full insurance coverage
  • Official partners
  • Support in case of schedule changes
  • Zero stress

The slightly lower prices offered by street vendors often come with hidden compromises. For me, reliability wins. We had no worries about finding the meeting point, whether our reservation had been made correctly, or what we would do if something went wrong.

🏖 Relax on the Beach

The main reason people visit Sunny Beach is simple — the beach itself.

You’ll find long stretches of golden sand, warm shallow water and plenty of beach bars. It’s perfect for both relaxing and swimming.

If you want something quieter, head towards Nessebar or Sveti Vlas.

🎢Visit Water Parks

If you’re travelling in summer, water parks are one of the most popular activities.

The two main ones are Action Aquapark and Aqua Paradise near Nessebar. Both are great for families and groups.

🏛 Explore Nessebar Old Town

One of the best things to do is visit Nessebar Old Town — a UNESCO-listed historic town just 10 minutes away.

It’s completely different from Sunny Beach, with cobbled streets, old churches and amazing sea views.

🚤 Take a Boat Trip

Boat trips are one of the best ways to experience the Black Sea coast.

You can join a catamaran cruise, sunset trip or even a fishing tour — most include food, drinks and swimming stops.

🎉 Experience the Nightlife

Sunny Beach is famous for its nightlife.

From beach bars to large clubs, the resort becomes very lively after sunset — especially around Cacao Beach.

🏎 Try Activities & Adventures

If you want something more active, there are plenty of options:

– Jet skiing and water sports
– Karting tracks
– Quad bike tours
– Amusement parks like Luna Park

🍽 Try Local Food & Restaurants

Don’t just eat at your hotel — trying local Bulgarian food is worth it.

Fresh seafood, grilled dishes and local wine are easy to find around Sunny Beach and Nessebar.

Immerse yourself in Bulgarian culture and traditions at a folklore show in a local village. Enjoy a delicious dinner of traditional Bulgarian cuisine at a local restaurant.

Day Trips from Sunny Beach Worth Making

One of Sunny Beach’s biggest advantages is its location. Within an hour’s drive, you can reach some of the most interesting spots on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast — and most are easy to do independently or as an organised excursion.

Nessebar Old Town (10 minutes)

The closest and most important. Nessebar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built on a tiny rocky peninsula — and it looks nothing like the resort next door. Ancient basilicas, Byzantine churches, medieval city walls and narrow cobbled streets. Most people give it 45 minutes. It deserves at least two hours. You can reach it by water taxi (15 BGN each way, 10 minutes), local bus (very cheap, runs regularly), or on foot along the coast road. Go early morning or late afternoon — midday in July is genuinely uncomfortable in the old streets.

Sozopol (50 minutes south)

Older than Nessebar, less touristy, and in my opinion more charming. The old town is built on wood-and-stone houses stacked along a rocky peninsula. Two sandy beaches flank the town — calm, clear water, far fewer sun loungers than Sunny Beach. Sozopol is best as a full-day trip. There are good fish restaurants along the harbour, and the Archaeological Museum is worth 30 minutes of your time. The Apollonia Arts Festival in September makes it even more worth visiting in shoulder season.

Pomorie (20 minutes north)

Most visitors bypass Pomorie — which is exactly why it’s worth a stop. The town sits on its own peninsula and is known for its salt lake, mud baths and the only Museum of Salt in the Balkans. The salt lake is genuinely surreal at certain times of day — pink-tinted water, flamingos occasionally visible in autumn. The mud baths near the lake have been used for therapeutic purposes for centuries. Not glamorous, but memorable.

Burgas (35 minutes)

Bulgaria’s fourth-largest city and the main urban hub of the region. Most tourists never visit — that’s a mistake. The Sea Garden is one of the best urban parks on the Black Sea. The covered market sells local produce, fresh fish and everything else. The Archaeological Museum has some of the best Thracian finds in the country. Burgas also has the best restaurant options in the region if you want something beyond tourist-menu food. Go on a weekday, avoid August.

Elenite and St. Vlas (15 minutes north)

Two smaller, quieter resorts just up the coast. Elenite is a self-contained resort complex set in pine forest above the sea — quieter, greener, and a complete contrast to Sunny Beach. St. Vlas has its own marina and a calmer beach. Both are worth a half-day if you want a change of pace without going far.

Practical Tips Before You Go

A few things most guides don’t mention:

  • Tap water: Safe to drink in hotels, but most locals and long-term visitors buy bottled water. Large 5-litre bottles from supermarkets cost under €1.
  • Beach sunbeds: The free public beach exists, but the best stretches in front of hotels charge for sunbeds — typically €5–10 per day per pair. Book early in July/August or arrive before 9am.
  • Pharmacies: Well-stocked and cheap. You can buy things over the counter that require a prescription in the UK. Useful for sunburn, digestive issues and minor ailments.
  • Mobile data: EU roaming applies for UK visitors post-Brexit only if your provider offers it. Check before you go — or pick up a local SIM at Burgas Airport for very little. An eSIM is another option worth considering.
  • Tipping: Not mandatory but appreciated. 10% in restaurants is standard. Round up taxi fares.
  • Airport transfer: Burgas Airport is 35 km away. Pre-booked transfers are around €15–20 per person. Taxis from the airport are cheaper but negotiate the price before you get in.

Getting Around

  • Local buses to Nessebar are cheap and frequent.
  • Taxis should always be ordered through your hotel reception.
  • Walking is easy — the promenade runs the length of the beach.

Who Sunny Beach Is For

Be realistic.

Sunny Beach is for:

  • Families
  • Groups of friends
  • Travelers who enjoy long sandy beaches
  • All-inclusive convenience
  • Lively nightlife

It is not for:

  • Secluded boutique seekers
  • Ultra-luxury privacy travelers

My Final Take

Sunny Beach works because it delivers scale. Big beach. Big hotels. Big choice.

If you plan properly, book through reliable partners, and avoid financial traps like unofficial ATMs, you’ll have a smooth and enjoyable holiday.

And if I had to choose the best time again?

September. Every time.
