Boat Trips from Sunny Beach, Bulgaria: Catamarans, Sunset Cruises & What to Expect

I’ve watched hundreds of tourists debate this on the strip. Is it worth it? Will I get seasick? Is it just a floating party? The answer depends entirely on which boat you get on — and there are more options than most people realise.

Here’s everything I know after being based on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

What Boat Trips Are Available from Sunny Beach?

The main departure hub is Nessebar Yacht Port — the harbour of the Old Town, about 10 minutes from Sunny Beach. Most operators include hotel pickup in the price, so you don’t need to find it yourself.

These are the main trip types:

Catamaran Cruises (Half-Day)

The most popular option for families and groups. You get a few hours on the water, a swimming stop, lunch, and drinks — beer, wine, soft drinks usually all included. VIP Catamaran and Catamaran Infinity are two well-known local operators. Prices typically run from around 52–80 EUR per adult depending on the program.

If you want to book with a trusted platform that lets you cancel or reschedule, GetYourGuide has boat tours listed for the Sunny Beach area — useful if you’re planning ahead from the UK.

Sunset Cruises

These are the ones I’d actually recommend if you only do one. Two to four hours on the water as the sun drops behind the Old Nessebar peninsula. The coastline toward St. Vlas and Elenite looks completely different at golden hour — less resort, more Black Sea.

One operator lists a romantic sunset cruise at 47 BGN for adults (~24 EUR), which is genuinely good value for what you get.

Fishing Trips

A 4-hour trip that takes you through the bays of Nessebar, Ravda, Pomorie, and Sunny Beach. Swimming and lunch included. These attract a more mixed crowd — less party, more actual relaxation. Klook has this listed if you want to check current prices and availability.

Pirate Boat / Party Cruises

Family-oriented rather than clubbing-oriented, despite the name. There’s animation, a lunch stop, unlimited drinks (usually), and a route that often goes as far as Pomorie. Listed at around 70 BGN per adult. Kids love it. Adults who didn’t read what they were booking sometimes don’t.

Private Yacht Charters

The premium end. You can book custom routes — Nessebar to Sozopol is a popular one — or a private sunset cruise. Prices jump significantly: one private picnic charter runs around 1,100 BGN, sunset charters from 440 BGN. Worth it for a special occasion or a small group splitting the cost.

Where Does the Boat Actually Go?

The standard panoramic route covers the Nessebar Bay coastline — Old Nessebar, Sunny Beach, St. Vlas, Elenite. You get views of the UNESCO-listed Old Town from the water, which looks better from a boat than it does from the shore, honestly.

Longer or more adventurous trips push further:

  • South toward Sozopol — old fishing town, islands, rocky coast
  • Pomorie — salt lake, mud baths, completely different atmosphere
  • Byala — steep rocky shoreline, small coves, much wilder than the resort strip

One detail worth knowing: the immediate Sunny Beach shoreline is sandy, not rocky, so snorkeling directly off the beach is limited. If you want actual underwater scenery, look for trips that stop at rockier stretches further along the coast.

The Water Taxi Nobody Talks About

If you just want a quick taste of being on the water — or an easy way to get to Old Nessebar without fighting traffic — there’s a water taxi between Sunny Beach and Nessebar Old Town that runs every 30 minutes. It costs 15 BGN each way. Takes about 10 minutes. The views of the Old Town arriving by sea are worth it alone.

When to Go

Season runs late May to September. The busiest and most reliably warm months are July and August — sunset cruises sell out fast in peak weeks, so book ahead if you have a specific date in mind.

One thing people don’t expect: it can feel noticeably cooler on the water than on the beach, even in July. Bring a light layer for the return leg if you’re going out in the evening.

What to Bring

  • Swimwear and towel (most trips have a swimming stop)
  • Sunscreen — wind on the water makes you forget you’re burning
  • Sunglasses and a hat
  • Light jacket for sunset trips
  • Water shoes if you plan to step off onto rocky ground
  • Camera or phone — the Old Nessebar skyline and the coast toward St. Vlas are genuinely worth photographing

If you’re prone to seasickness, choose a larger catamaran rather than a smaller speedboat, sit in the middle of the vessel, and don’t eat a heavy meal right before departure.

Beyond the Boat: What to Combine

Nessebar Old Town

You’re departing from here anyway. Give yourself an hour to walk the medieval walls, the ruined basilicas, and the narrow streets before or after your trip. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and most people spend 20 minutes there. Don’t be most people.

Pomorie Salt Lake

If your boat trip goes to Pomorie, or you’re driving there, the Museum of Salt is the only one in Bulgaria and the Balkans dedicated to traditional solar salt production. Genuinely interesting for 20 minutes, and the salt lake itself looks surreal.

Sozopol

Further south, older than Nessebar, less crowded. Private yacht tours often route this way. If you’re spending more than a week on the Black Sea coast, it deserves a full day.

How to Book

Option 1 — GetYourGuide: Best if you’re booking from home and want confirmed cancellation terms. Browse Sunny Beach boat tours here.

Option 2 — Klook: Good for the fishing/lunch combo. Check availability here.

Option 3 — Local operators direct: Sunny Beach Day Trips, VIP Catamaran, Express Tours all sell directly and often bundle hotel transfers. Walk-up works outside peak season but is risky in July/August for popular sunset slots.

So — Is It Worth It?

Yes, with one condition: pick the right trip for what you actually want.

If you want to relax, eat, and swim — catamaran half-day.

If you want photos and atmosphere — sunset cruise.

If you have kids — pirate boat (they’ll talk about it for months).

If you want to see the real coastline — private charter toward Sozopol or Byala.

The water taxi to Nessebar is worth doing regardless. 15 BGN, 10 minutes, and you arrive at a 3,000-year-old city by sea. That’s not a bad deal.
